A Buckeye is selected to lead the Buckeye state’s campus carry reform efforts.

Ohio State Student Michael Newbern was named Students for Concealed Carry state director for Ohio today. Michael, a third year engineering student US Navy Submarine Veteran, will leave his position as President of Buckeyes for Concealed Carry to perform his duties as state director. His new focus will be supervising and coordinating all chapters in Ohio, lobbying for legislation, and handling litigation.

Michael and a small group of likeminded students started Buckeyes for Concealed Carry, Students for Concealed Carry’s Ohio State University chapter last fall. Since then, it has grown to be Ohio’s leader in campus carry reform activism. The Leadership Institute selected Buckeyes for Concealed Carry as one of eleven campus victories in the nation. In its first year, the group and members have been featured in and appeared in interviews on NRA News, Cam and Company, every central Ohio television network affiliate, WOSU, the Dispatch, The Lantern, UWeekly, Campus Reform, the Los Angeles Times, and hundreds of other media outlets across the country.

“When we were presented with an opening in our Ohio leadership, Michael was an easy decision,” said Reid Smith, Students for Concealed Carry Regional Director. “He has been an effective leader at Ohio State. We are confident he will lead multiple campuses and represent all university affiliate licensees in the statehouse effectively in a manner that not only accurately reflects their voice but also dispels many myths people have of student licensees.”

“I am honored to be selected as Students for Concealed Carry’s leader in Ohio,” said Newbern. “I was fortunate enough to surround myself with other passionate students, faculty, and staff and as a team we built Buckeyes for Concealed Carry and look forward to working with other students all across the state to restore the right to self-defense.” Newbern added, “but let’s not forget this about more than students. Faculty, staff, and non-university affiliates are equally disarmed and defenseless. Recent events only show that gun free zones are never really gun free and empower criminals to victimize law-abiding citizens.

And that needs to change.”

Students for Concealed Carry is a nationwide non-partisan student organization. The group’s sole mission is to restore the right of law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms on all public university campuses. The group works to accomplish this mission by educating the public, university officials, and lawmakers of the facts about campus carry and lobbying to remove the restrictions on campus carry from the laws of the state.
